Occupational Safety and Health Organization

10.5 Occupational Safety and Health Organization

I choose the World Health Organization (WHO), and their efforts toward occupational health have been through an initiative to promote workers health through a global plan of action.

Their plan of action focuses on a couple of different areas:

  1. To implement national policies to establish mechanisms and legal framework to implement, monitor and evaluate workers health
  2. To have full occupational health services for all workers globally
  3. To strengthen institutional capacities and human resource capabilities to deal with the special health needs of workers by developing evidence on the heterogenous needs of workers and translating that into policies and actions
  4. develop specific guidelines for workers and communities with positions that produce hazardous material
  5. Promote collaboration across all organization that focus on occupational health
  6. To encourage occupational health presence in more national policies
  7. Encourage collaboration and cooperation between developed and developing countries, with specific emphasis around migrant workers
  8. Encourage strategies of getting sick and injured workers reintegrated into communities through coordination of policies and actions

They additionally have a WHO Workers Health team who work on different facets of their 8 focus areas around the world to keep driving their initiatives. The WHO health worker team produces newsletters to update local and global initiatives that happen through the WHO health worker initiative.

  1. I really like this idea for a global outreach and efforts to bring safety to those in countries that may not think that much about their workers safety. I think it is so important that all the efforts made in already developed countries, get taken and utilized in less developed countries to suit their needs and help them improve their quality of life.
