Indoor Air Quality

M4.5 Indoor Air Quality

Air quality is significantly impacted by the pollutants that mankind has introduced into our environment. The pollutants can be even more apparent within the confines of ones on home without the proper ventilation or education about how to create a safer and healthier environment.

I think the first step in developing a chemical/fragrance free policy is a school, institution or hospital would be education. Education of the students, the employees, or other staff members to ensure that they felt empowered to take their health, and the health of their colleagues or peers into their own hands. Additionally, regular meetups and inspections should be completed by an air quality monitor, whether that is a consultant or a volunteer from the staff, to then act as a second pair of eyes to ensure the safety of the work space and continue the culture of constant positive environmental updates. They would have a working relationship as well with the local gas and electric companies to help ensure all of the systems in the building were working safely and efficiently, and be replaced if otherwise.

All cleaning and supplies within the school, hospital, of institution would be chemical/fragrance free and would work with vendors that offered full transparency of their products and manufacturing practices. Through the use of education, continuous monitoring, and practiced reform of the products we introduce into our work environment, we expect to reduce the exposure to toxic pollutants.

  1. I agree that education is the key to raising awareness on indoor air quality. If facilitators knew what harmful chemicals are lingering in the air then there would be a higher standard for air quality in inclosed public spaces. I also think the introduction to children and adults to a Material Safety Data Sheet is helpful so that they are aware of dangerous chemicals in storage areas.
